Our Four-Legged Officers Need Your Help
Every day law enforcement K-9s put their lives on the line to protect their handlers, our families and the community. Unlike their human partners, when their active-duty career ends, these K-9 officers, don't get a pension, don't get money for food or medical care. Many have served with their human partner / handlers loyally and will be luckily adopted by them.
The expense of taking care of these retired service K-9s is huge. That is why Highway Patrol K-9 Association of California was formed -- to help these loyal and brave public servants live their best lives after serving us. This is why we need your help. |

We are not funded by taxpayer dollars. All members of the Highway Patrol K-9 Association of California are unpaid volunteers. |
Costs To Take Care of a Retired K-9 Officer
Vet VisitsVet visits and shots cost between $100-$250 a year. Our beloved Belgian Malinois and German Shepard partners are now older and require Senior Veterinary examinations. These could include besides the examination and required inoculations; X-Rays, Ultrasounds, biopsies, blood work, pain management medication, etc. Our total Vet Only expenses for 2023 were over $6,000. Surgeries & MedicationsRetired German Shepherd dogs frequently need surgery for hip dysplasia. Surgery can be anywhere between $3,500 per hip to $7,000 depending on your dog's condition, size, age, overall health and other factors. Some of our dogs also develop tumors which require surgery. Having required surgeries often prolong the K9’s life into years, which is the goal. |
FoodUnlike the average family pet, a police service dog is extremely active and requires a diet formulated to meet its increased energy and nutrient demands. Food can cost between $250-$500 a month. End of Watch CremationWhen we need to say good-by to our K-9 officers the cost to euthanize and cremate is $200-$350 |
